Could Milton choose to stay home?

Kendall Milton, the highest-rated recruit from the Central Valley ever, announced his top ten finalists this afternoon. Fortunately for Jeff Tedford and Fresno State, the Class of 2020’s second-best runner, per 247Sports, has narrowed his list to include college football’s elite… and the Bulldogs.

Milton, a running back at Buchanan High School in Clovis, California — a football hotbed which neighbors Fresno — had accumulated a total of 38 offers, according to his 247Sports recruiting profile. Among this list were four Mountain West teams: Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, San Jose State.

There was a great deal of speculation that Fresno State, in particular, might get a nod considering the team’s dramatic turnaround last fall, and a re-emphasis on local recruiting that has already netted local prospects like Emoryie Edwards and Rodney Wright III in the past two classes. As it turns out, Milton may still join them, though there is plenty of work left to be done.

The rest of the list is a who’s who of powerhouses: Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Miami (FL), Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Texas and USC.

Though the Bulldogs may face some long odds in landing what would certainly be the best recruit in the program’s history, fans shouldn’t get discouraged if Milton decides to leave for a Power 5 program in the end. In the class of 2018, quarterback Adrian Martinez committed to Nebraska and record-setting Kazmeir Allen left the Valley for UCLA. The conference has nonetheless found a way to do well for itself in the area, landing commitments from the likes of Edwards, Wright, Sean Chambers (Wyoming) and D.J. Schramm (Boise State).
