Can a Mountain West star break through?

Watch list season continued today with the release of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy’s list of players to follow. Given annually to the nation’s outstanding defensive player, there are four athletes from the Mountain West, out of 92 in all, in what should be a competitive field.

Curtis Weaver continued to rack up the preseason accolades, headlining the Nagurski list after tallying 15 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks for the Boise State Broncos in 2018.

Fresno State linebacker Mykal Walker also made the cut after making his hay at defensive end last fall. He had 4.5 sacks for the Bulldogs and led the team with 14 tackles for loss.

San Diego State linebacker Kyahva Tezino found his way onto the Nagurski, too, after a breakout 2018 in which he racked up 14.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. Utah State’s David Woodward also landed here after posting five sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss and a conference-best 134 tackles in 2018.

Last year’s Nagurski Trophy winner was former Kentucky defensive end Josh Allen.
