Toledo Looks To Rebound From Disappointing 2018

Colorado State will roll out the welcome mat to the Toledo Rockets in week four. It will be the Rams final non-conference game of 2019 and their second home game of the season.

Coach: Jason Candle, third season
2018 Record: 7-6, 5-3 Conference

2018 Season In Review
The 2018 season was a bit of a disappointment for the Toledo Rockets. While they maintained their bowl streak (five straight), Toledo’s rebuild was a bit more than expected. The Rockets had a rash of injuries at the quarterback position but proved that they have a formidable running game.

Key Players Returning
RB Bryant Koback, QB Mitchell Guadagni, QB Eli Peters, DE Jamal Hines, DE Terrance Taylor, OL Bryce Harris.

2019 Strengths

Run, run, run. When quarterbacks go down, which they very much did at Toledo in 2018, they relied heavily on the running game. RB Bryant Koback didn’t begin the season as a starter but proved he was one by mid season. He ended up rushing for 14 touchdowns and almost a 1,000 yards. If the battle between QB’s Guadagni and Peters doesn’t shake out early and a new crop of receivers cannot be found, look for Koback to be carrying the load once again.

2019 Weakness

Toledo got pushed around last year. They held only three opponents to under 20 points but ranked 89th in Total Defense. While they lose most of their top tacklers, they do return a decent pass rush that will feature Hines and Taylor. Both need to put on weight but can very much take advantage of an inexperienced offensive line.

The receiving corps is, at best, inexperienced but that won’t matter much if a quarterback cannot be found and/or stay healthy.
