Mountain West Bracketology: Who’s In, Who’s Out, and Bubble Teams to Watch

As the college basketball season heats up, the Mountain West Conference (MWC) is shaping up to be one of the most competitive mid-major leagues in the country. With Selection Sunday fast approaching, teams are jockeying for position in the NCAA Tournament field, making every game down the stretch crucial. Here’s a deep dive into Mountain West bracketology—who’s securely in, which teams are on the bubble, and who needs a miracle run to make it to March Madness.

Teams Safely In

San Diego State Aztecs (Projected Seed: 8-10)

The Aztecs have been the Mountain West’s most consistent program in recent years, and this season is no different. With multiple Quad 1 wins and a strong strength of schedule, San Diego State has already done enough to punch its ticket. The focus now is on improving seeding with a strong conference tournament performance.

However, not making a deep Mountain West Tournament run will ding their seed for March Madness.

Utah State Aggies (Projected Seed: 7-9)

Utah State has emerged as one of the biggest surprises this season, climbing into the national rankings with an impressive resume. Their offensive efficiency and balanced scoring attack make them a dangerous team come tournament time. Their deep run in the MWC Tournament should help their seed despite falling to Colorado State into the title game.

New Mexico Lobos (Projected Seed: 10-First Four Out)

New Mexico has a strong case for an at-large bid but remains on shaky ground due to some inconsistent performances. Wins over tournament-caliber teams bolster their argument, but any bad loss down the stretch could spell disaster. Their upcoming matchups and MWC Tournament performance will determine their fate.

Bubble team

Boise State Broncos (Projected Seed: 8-10)

Boise State has compiled a solid resume with a combination of Quad 1 and Quad 2 victories. While they might not be a lock just yet, especially not making the Mountain West tournament final. The Broncos’ defensive prowess makes them a potential Cinderella pick for bracket-fillers in March.

However, the Broncos will need to root the Memphis Tigers to win the AAC title game over No. 3 seeded UAB Blazers. A UAB win almost for sure knocks out Boise State of the NCAA Tournament.
