Eustachy is officially out at Colorado State
Colorado State has parted ways with men’s basketball head coach Larry Eustachy, first reported by the Denver Post. Officially, Eustachy is resigning as the Rams head coach and he will be paid $750,000 for stepping down.
Eustachy has been in hot water as he was placed on administrative leave on Feb. 3 in what was being called a “climate assessment.” The reasoning behind the leave was because of his conduct. This was not the first time that Eustachy had conduct issues with the team.
There was a report from last year which stated that from 2013-14 the coach was accused of “culture of fear and intimidation” towards players. Eustachy was given a zero-tolerance policy due to his behavior.
“We really did think Eustachy’s behavior improved after the 2013-14 season and into 2015 and 2016, but this season it became obvious that there were still some issues,” a university source told Matt Stephens of the Denver Post.
Eustachy will be on paid administrative leave up until July 1, 2018, and then also receive three payments totaling $750,000. The negotiations were the reason for this taking about a month to resolve.
Both sides got something out of this because Eustachy had three years left on his deal that would have paid Eustachy close to $3 million, so him getting $750,000 and his salary through the summer is a bonus because the Rams might have been able to fire him for cause.
Colorado State avoids paying him the rest of his contract and avoid a potential costly lawsuit if Eustachy were to fight being let go for cause.
The Rams are settled for the rest of the year with Jase Herl as the interim coach, but the search for a new head coach begins now.
