Former top-100 recruit off to Fresno
Fresno State landed a significant commitment from Jermarl Baker Jr, an Arizona transfer. Last season before finishing the season injured, the newly-minted Fresno State Bulldog had a career season, raining in 12 PPG — including a 33 point outburst and 29 point outing. The final four games Baker played hinders his overall stats because they were brutal, but he was playing injured.
When you get a 6’5 guy, an original Kentucky commit (and played one season in Lexington) before playing the past two seasons in Tucson for the Arizona Wildcats.
It’s not a surprise the Menifee, CA native ended up in the Mountain West, but many had envisioned SDSU being the favorites to land him. He can now instantly step-in and give Justin Hutson a guard to work with for the first time since the Braxton Huggins, Deshon Taylor & New Williams days back in 2018-19. We saw this season, Fresno was in dyer need of a guard with above-average shooting ability from deep.
OUTLOOK FOR FRESNO:
Baker is going to start from day-one with ease at the two guard spot, with Isaiah Hill slated to start at the point once again, following a promising season in 2020-21. You’ll then see Deon Stroud coming into the fold at the wing spot, set to show off some more of his insane athleticism, and of course Orlando Robinson will hold down the center spot.
That leaves one role unoccupied, Fresno needs to add a four-man, potentially a stretch-four to become a complete starting five. The way that lineup looks now, if Justin Hutson adds a four-man & some depth, don’t be surprised to see the Bulldogs get back into the upper half in the Mountain West.
