McDonald or Cordeiro
Hawaii has a full on quarterback controversy heading into its next game. Luckily for head coach Nick Rolovich, he has two weeks to make the decision between Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro.
McDonald was named the starter heading into the Week 0 game against Arizona and he brought the excitement, both good and bad.
The offense was humming along for most of the game as McDonald completed 29 of 41 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns. Well, that seems nice but the four interceptions were too much for head coach Nick Rolovich to contend with.
Passes like this interception are why McDonald was removed from the game. That is exactly what Rolovich said in his post-game comments.
“Four picks. There were some questionable decisions when it got tough so we went with Chev and is completely capable of leading this team,” Rolovich said.
Cordeiro immedately came in and looked far less chaotic than McDonald in the pocket. He wrapped up the game completing 5 of 7 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.
There was a dramatically different look with the quarterback change. McDonald seemed to be running around with no direction but Cordeiro seemed calmer and much less erratic. In other words, Cordeiro was more stable and the safe player but he also showed great flashes in the downfield passing game.
McDonald also was seen as a player who could make plays with his feet, which he did at times, but he had 21 yards on six carries, whereas Cordeiro has five for 34 yards and in a lot less playing time.
In Rolovich’s post-game comments, he likes how both quarterbacks played and see his situation as a positive and not a negative for having a pair of great players.
“The team believes in both quarterbacks and we are in a unique and beneficial situation with our quarterbacks,” Rolovich said. “You can give Cole credit, Chevan credit and you have to give [quarterback coach] Craig Stutzmann credit for how he has developed these guys. They are fully prepared heading into a game and believe in the system.”
There was no mention of who will start when the Warriors take on another Pac-12 team in Oregon State on Sept. 7. With two weeks to prepare there is plenty of time to find out who should be the starter.
