The biggest name in a new exodus.

The Hawaii Warriors didn’t have the season that they’d hoped for and now, less than a week after its conclusion and one day after losing running back Dae Dae Hunter to the transfer portal, they’ll need to find a new quarterback.

Chevan Cordeiro is the latest Hawaii player to enter the portal, in news first broken by Chris Hummer of 247Sports. He isn’t the first Warriors quarterback to exit the program in recent memory as Boone Abbott did so back in August, but Cordeiro’s departure comes at a crucial time for a program that arguably underperformed in 2021.

Cordeiro first broke onto the college football scene in 2018, making an appearance in four games while starting one and quickly built a reputation as a winner in leading two come-from-behind victories that year. That penchant for excitement got reinforced the following year when, as a redshirt freshman, he saw action in 12 games and started three, all of which were Hawaii wins. For good measure, he also led the winning touchdown drive against San Diego State that clinched the West division title for the Warriors.

He became the unquestioned starter following Cole McDonald’s departure in 2020 and earned an all-conference honorable mention nod while leading the Warriors to a New Mexico Bowl victory over Houston. In all, he posted a career-best 62.3% completion rate with 2,083 passing yards and 14 touchdowns against six interceptions that season.

2021 brought a few more challenges, most notably injuries which kept him out of three games in the middle of the season. He set a new career-high with 17 passing touchdowns, but also threw 11 interceptions, tied for the most among Mountain West quarterbacks.

In 36 career games, Cordeiro owns a 58.6% completion rate and has thrown for 6,167 yards and 45 touchdowns with 22 interceptions. He’s also run for 1,083 yards (not sack-adjusted) and 13 rushing touchdowns. Should Hawaii be selected for a bowl game, the likely starting quarterback will be true freshman Brayden Schager, who has played in six games this season while starting three of them.
