The Fresno State Bulldogs head back on the road to open Mountain West play against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday night. For the home team, it’s a chance to disrupt preseason projections and keep pace with the West division-leading Hawaii Warriors, though it may come with an unexpected obstacle.
The health of starting quarterback Ty Gangi is still very much in the air after slugfests against Toledo and Air Force, so backup Cristian Solano may have a moment in the spotlight against a Bulldogs defense that currently ranks second in the Mountain with 4.82 yards per play allowed.
The Bulldogs offense will have an opportunity to keep things rolling, as well, against an unpredictable Nevada defense. The Wolf Pack trail only the Bulldogs in opponents’ third-down conversion rate and lead the conference in tackles for loss, but they are tied for eighth in plays of 20-plus yards allowed and ninth in scoring defense, allowing 36.6 yards per game so far this fall.
One key factor to watch is how penalties influence the game. Fresno State has been flagged just 18 times this season, while Nevada drew 13 penalties last week, their most since losing the Fremont Cannon in 2013. They are currently tied for 119th nationally, so finding more discipline will give them a better chance against the heavily favored Bulldogs.
