The defending Mountain West champs have a new OC.
Following Kalen DeBoer’s departure for Indiana, the question about who would replace him as Fresno State’s offensive coordinator was subject to a lot of speculation but, per FootballScoop.com, it appears the Bulldogs have kept it simple and found an answer from among the returning staff.
Ryan Grubb, who arrived at Fresno State with DeBoer back in 2016, is set to be promoted from his current position as the team’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator. This development comes along with the news that the Bulldogs have reportedly hired Danny Langsdorf, who spent 2018 as an offensive analyst for the Oregon Ducks, as quarterbacks coach.
Grubb’s offensive lines have been a revelation in his first two years with the Bulldogs, improving the team’s Adjusted Sack Rate from 86th nationally in 2016 to second in 2017. That line remained one of the nation’s best in 2018, as well, with a 2.9% rate that ranked seventh in the FBS, solidifying an attack that ranked 30th by Offensive S&P+.
This is not the first time that Grubb has replaced DeBoer as an offensive coordinator. The two spent time together at the NAIA University of Sioux Falls from 2007 to 2009, and Grubb earned the same promotion from run game coordinator/offensive line coach to OC in 2010 when DeBoer moved on to Southern Illinois.
Langsdorf is a familiar face from Jeff Tedford’s Pac-12 days, where he served as Oregon State’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator under Mike Riley from 2005 to 2013. During his time in Corvallis, Langsdorf had a hand in developing NFL players like Matt Moore, Jacquizz Rodgers and Brandin Cooks, and he also worked with Sean Mannion to become the program’s all-time leading passer. A second stint at OC and QB coach at Nebraska, from 2015 to 2017, was less successful as the Cornhuskers slipped from 29th to 68th to 81st in Offensive S&P+.
