The senior has had a sensational year.
The Maxwell Award, given annually to the Collegiate Player of the Year, announced its semifinalist list this morning and Fresno State quarterback Marcus McMaryion has been named among 20 of the nation’s best.
The Dinuba native has taken a huge step forward with an entire off-season to command the Bulldogs offense, leading the Mountain West with a passer rating of 167.21 and a 70.4% completion rate while throwing for 2,142 yards and 18 touchdowns against just two interceptions. He’s also chipped in with seven rushing touchdowns, as well, the best such figure among Mountain West quarterbacks, putting together a challenge for the best overall season by a Fresno State quarterback ever.
He’ll have some competition for the prestigious honor, however, as he is one of 11 quarterbacks on the Maxwell’s list. Houston’s D’Eriq King and UCF’s McKenzie Milton are the only other Group of 5 quarterbacks to make the cut, and Milton, along with Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor, are repeat semifinalists from 2017.
Last year’s Maxwell Award winner was former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
