Rivals will face off in Mountain West title game
The 2017 Mountain West championship game is now set after Fresno State’s 13-7 victory over Wyoming on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs clinched the West Division title and are back in the conference title game for the first time since 2014. This is also Fresno State’s third appearance in the conference championship game, and that is the most in league history.
With this win the Mountain Division has also been decided as Boise State clinches by virtue of Wyoming losing to the Bulldogs, and the Broncos will be making its second Mountain West title game appearance.
This 2017 matchup will be a rematch of the 2014 game which Boise State won 28-14, and then went on to defeat Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl.
This makes the season finale against Boise State and Fresno State somewhat anti-climatic as both have clinched. However, home field advantage could be on the line next weekend.
The Mountain West rules state that the team ranked higher in the College Football Playoff rankings earns is the home team. Currently, Boise State is ranked 25th and if they defeat Air Force and then defeat Fresno State and would host the title game.
However, if neither team is ranked then the first tie-breaker is not head-to-head but rather the composite computer rankings of the old BCS formula.
For the Broncos to host they will need to win out, but they still could host if they lose either game to Air Force or Fresno State. Losing both should give the Bulldogs home field.
The Mountain West title game will take place on Dec. 2 with a 7:45 p.m. ET kick and will be televised on ESPN.
