GAME NOTES (PDF): Eastern Michigan | San Diego State
San Diego State welcomes Eastern Michigan to San Diego for a Saturday night matchup. EMU had an impressive win in Week 2, when the Eagles won on the road Purdue 20-19 on a last-second field goal.
Why Eastern Michigan will win
Offensively, after three games against Monmouth, Purdue and Buffalo, EMU is averaging 33 points and 459.6 total yards per game, which rank 6th and 2nd among MAC teams thus far, respectively. Eastern Michigan has used a two-quarterback system and it has been pretty productive. Tyler Wiegers, an Iowa grad transfer, is 46-of-71 with 614 passing yards and three touchdowns. The other quarterback, Mike Glass III, has completed 22 out of 37 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns.
On the ground, Glass III leads the team with 130 rushing yards (after adjusting for sacks) while Shaq Vann has the most carries with 29. On defense, Vince Calhoun has 25 tackles, 13 of which have been solo tackles.
Why San Diego State will win
Juwan Washington has rushed for 452 yards on 87 carries and has scored five touchdowns, but he has missed some practice this week while battling turf toe. Keeping him fresh with a healthy dose of Chase Jasmin will help a lot. The Aztecs have a pretty strong front seven, too, that will go against the fast-paced Eastern Michigan offense. Led by linebackers Kyahva Tezino and Ronley Lakalaka, the Aztecs defense will continue to shine.
San Diego State quarterback Ryan Agnew played well in the upset over #23 Arizona State. He was 12-of-24 for 129 yards and one touchdown. With star senior quarterback Christian Chapman out for two to five more weeks, Agnew will need to keep his consistent play up. Wide receivers Tim Wilson (who is also battling injury), Ethan Dedeaux and Fred Trevillion, as well as tight end Kahale Warring, will also need to step up.
What will happen
This will be a highly contested game and all three levels of the game will need to play well for the Aztecs to win. The Eagles are a solid team that fly under the radar, so it will be up to the Aztec players to see if they can outperform this Eastern Michigan team, especially in the second half.
