Colorado State’s Trey McBride Named John Mackey Award Winner

Trey McBride named nation’s top tight end

McBride ends his CSU career as the best tight end in school history.

It’s official! Trey McBride was named the John Mackey Award winner on Thursday evening. Texas A&M’s Jalen Wydermyer and Iowa State’s Charlie Kolar were the other finalists for the award. McBride was a true throwback tight end, being the only finalist to take over 50% (69.3%) of his snaps in line.

McBride’s final season at Colorado State was one for the record books. He finsihed with 90 receptions for 1,121 yards and a touchdown. The 90 recpetions were the fourth best single season CSU mark. The 1,121 yards were eighth best. And he became the first Colorado State tight end to record a 1,000-yard season.

McBride could’ve left after last season and gone to the NFL, but he would’ve been a second or third day pick in the draft. Instead he came back for one more year to prove himself and to play one more year of football with his older brother Toby.

Trey McBride ends his career at Colorado State with a final stat line of 164 receptions, for 2,100 yards, and 10 touchdowns. His receptions rank him 7th on the career receptions list for Colorado State. Ranks 9th all time in yards. And had eight 100 yard receiving games, which ranks 6th all time at Colorado State.

And as his last act in a CSU uniform, McBride took a fake punt 69 yards for a touchdown against future Colorado State coach Jay Norvell and the Nevada Wolf Pack.
