Things have not turned out as planned for the Colorado State Rams this season. First, the head coach goes down and is away from the team for a few weeks at the end of training camp. Then, the defense struggles. And then the offense struggles. But what’s done is done, and the Rams look to restart their season against the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday in San Jose. Here are three ways they can come away with the win.
RUN THE BALL
To say that Colorado State misses last season’s leading rusher, Dalyn Dawkins, and center Jake Bennett would be an understatement. The Rams have 463 yards rushing as a team so far in 2018; that ranks 121st in the FBS. The good news is that San Jose State has 218 yards rushing this season, which is dead last. Look for a heavy dose of Izzy Matthews and Marvin Kinsey Jr. on Saturday.
Consistency On Defense
The defense has struggled to find consistency this year. They have yet to put together a full 60 minutes of football in 2018. That needs to happen if the Rams look to make it to their sixth straight bowl game. San Jose State can’t run the football, so that should make it easy for the Rams to force them to be one-dimensional and then pin their ears back and rush the passer.
Full 60
Over the last few years, Colorado State had players who could bail them out, whether it was Dawkins, Michael Gallup or Nick Stevens. Of course, those players are gone and the Rams have yet to find consistent replacements despite some remarkable game-by-game performances from the likes of Preston Williams. Until they do, they need to be more consistent as a team in all three phases.
Colorado State has shown flashes this season of what it can be, as with the offensive explosion in the second half against Hawai’i or the defensive stands against Arkansas. The Rams need to put it all together in this game or it probably won’t ever happen in 2018.
