The Colorado State Rams have been in the need of a new offensive coordinator ever since Will Friend decided to take the offensive line coach at Tennessee prior to the bowl game.
It now seems that the Rams have a new offensive coach with the addition of Ohio’s Dave Johnson, according to Football Scoop.
Johnson’s official title with the Bobcats is co-offensive coordinator, run game coordinator and offensive line coach. The assumption is that Johnson will be the Rams offensive coordinator. This hire would fit both needs which Friend left as he was also the Rams offensive line coach.
The 2017 season was the peak of Ohio’s offense with Johnson as they finished first in points per game with 39.1, second in yards per game and yards per play en route to a 9-4 finish plus a 41-6 dominant victory over UAB in the Bahamas Bowl.
There were also seven Ohio players who were named to the second-team All-MAC this past year.
Prior to coaching four years at Ohio, who coached at Cincinnati, West Virginia, Marshall and was with Georgia alongside Bobo for seven seasons.
Johnson has coached in 16 bowl games with an 11-5 record, and at each stop has done a good job of being part of good offenses. He has sent 12 offensive players to the NFL and coached 32 all-league selections.
Possibly the biggest reason he is heading to Colorado State is the time between 2001-07 when Bobo and Johnson were on a Georgia staff that won 72 games, three SEC East Division Championships, two SEC Championships, five bowl wins and five top-10 national finishes.
