Colorado State Hires Alabama DB Coach Derrick Ansley As Defensive Coordinator

A Colorado State is coaching in the national title game.

Colorado State has found its new defensive coordinator to replace the retiring Marty English and it is a coach who is participating in Monday night’s College Football Playoff title game between Georgia and Alabama.
The new defensive coordinator is soon-to-be former Alabama defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley, first reported by Football Scoop.
Rams head coach Mike Bobo is reaching back to his SEC ties which he coached at Georgia from 1999-2014 — one year in that was at Jacksonville State in 2000.
Ansley joined Nick Saban’s staff on Feb. 10, 2016 and in two years has produced an elite unit which in 2017 led the nation in pass efficiency with opponents completing just 54 percent of their throws and only seven passing touchdowns allowed.
Prior to coaching at Alabama he spend three years in the SEC as a defensive backs coach at Tennessee (2012) and Kentucky (2013-15). He played his college football at Troy.
He has exclusively coached in the southeastern part of the country and this should be a good move in recruiting to go along with Bobo’s ties in the area. Also, having a coach learn under Saban is an added bonus.

Ansey likely could be taking a pay cut to move up the coaching ladder as a defensive coordinator in the Mountain West. His salary at Alabama is $405,000 while English made $235,000, per the USA TODAY coaching salary database.
Expect a more than normal talk about Colorado State in this title game. There will be at least one mention of Ansey getting a promotion and taking a defensive coordinator job with the Rams, and also on ESPNews where Bobo is one of the coaches in the popular “Coaches Film Room.”
