New Defensive Coordinator Brings Wealth Of Big Time Experience

Well it took longer than expected but Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo finally landed a new defensive coordinator and not a moment too soon.

Alabama defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley was supposed to take over for the retired Marty English but before he could even make it to Fort Collins, he took a position with the Oakland Raiders.

That sent Bobo to his next choice, former Georgia co-defensive coordinator and former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Jancek.

“I am excited to welcome John Jancek and his family to Colorado State,” Head coach Mike Bobo said. “To attract a coach with his knowledge and experience to our football program is significant, and he will be instrumental in helping us reach our goals.”

“I’ve had the opportunity to coach on the same staff with John at Georgia, and I’ve coordinated offenses that have gone up against his defenses,” Bobo added. “He has a great deal of experience coaching and winning at the highest levels of college football, and I’m very excited he is part of the Ram Family.”

So what happened?

According to the Denver Post, Ansley agreed to become the new coordinator on Monday but later reached an agreement to become the defensive backs coach for the Oakland Raiders sometime between Monday and early Thursday. That left Bobo and the Rams scrambling but it also meant that they ended up with a coordinator with more experience than Ansley when it comes to running a defense.

FootballScoop.com posted on their site on Thursday that Jancek was coming on board but didn’t say in what capacity. Then Friday morning they reported that Jancek would be the new defensive coordinator for Colorado State.

Jancek and Bobo worked together on the Georgia staff back from 2005-2009. Jancek would later go on to lead defenses at Cincinnati and Tennessee under the Butch Jones regimes. He spent last season as a defensive assitant at Kentucky.

Jancek will have his work cut out for him as he is tasked with improving a defense that ranked 97th in the country in Total Defense last season. He will also have to hire out a staff all the while hitting the recruiting trail in hopes of improving the talent level before national signing day.
