Colorado State is making waves by seriously considering former Ram great and current San Antonio Spurs assistant coach, Becky Hammon. She is expected to get an interview, per the Denver Post.

Her basketball qualifications and local playing career where Hammon was a three-time All-American, and NBA coaching career make this a great potential hire. The one knock is her lack of college coaching experise.

Last week, athletic director Joe Parker said of hiring the first female NCAA coach for a men’s program, “I’m not closing the door on any thought.”

Colorado State is early in the search process as they have not contacted any candidate to replace Larry Eustachy who resigned prior to the Mountain West tournament.

While Hammon would make a lot of sense and bring in some publicity and buzz to the Rams program, there is a hurdle in the way.

That issue is pay, and it has nothing to do with her gender. To come to Colorado State, which would be her first head coaching job, she very likely would have to take a pay cut, per the Denver Post report.

Eustachy’s salary was $985,012 this past year and that was to increase to just over a million bucks next year, but Parker is not willing to make its next coach one of the highest in the league. The next coaches salary will be around the conference average of $650,000.

That makes sense for Colorado State and it also points out what type of coach the Rams are looking for, and they are not going to over pay for the next coach.

Also to consider is that Hammon might have higher aspirations such as an NBA head coach or general manager.
