Fresno State fans should be extremely happy as they have won nine games, won the West Division, ranked in the AP poll and beat rival Boise State. Now, the Bulldogs are ranked for the first time this season in the College Football Playoff poll at No. 25.
That is a great accomplishment considering the turnaround from last year, and years past. However, some Fresno State fans are channeling Arthur.
The Bulldogs are already going on the road to play Boise State in the title game despite beating the Broncos, and that is because computer ratings were used to decide who hosts since Boise State would not be ranked in the next set of playoff rankings.
Also, the Las Vega Bowl director, John Saccenti, said that he is open taking either Boise State or Fresno State. That is also making Bulldog fans not too happy, unless that means they can get to the Cactus or Foster Farms Bowl.
Back to the playoff rankings and hosting the conference title game. The rules are very specific about who hosts the Mountain West title game.
The league states that if a team is ranked in the College Football Playoff ranking going into the final week of regular season they are designated as host school unless it loses its final regular season game. Well, that happened and the first item to determine host is the computer rankings.
So, even though Fresno State is ranked in the final regular season College Football Playoff poll they are still the road team in the conference title game, but those are the rules that the league has put in place.
One game does not make a season, but it just looks bad when Fresno State beat Boise State and is no ranked in two of the three major polls. Who knows if the Mountain West will tweak how a host is determined, but for one thing it gives the league a black mark and is making Fresno State fans not too happy.
