“There’s an argument that (Chapman) might be the best quarterback that ever played here” – Rocky Long
Christian Chapman maintains a 23-6 record as starting quarterback for the San Diego State Aztecs, and needs just one more win to break his tie with Ryan Lindley for the school record.
Clearly, Chapman has an opportunity to shatter the record this season and set the bar very high. How high? If the last three years are any indicator he could complete the season with a career record of 33 or more wins.
To Aztecs head coach Rocky Long, no quarterback statistic is more important than starting wins.
“I don’t think Christian Chapman gets the credit he deserves,” Long argued at SDSU football media day. “I thought the criteria for being a great quarterback was how many games you win.”
Long went further to make a big statement:
“There’s an argument that (Chapman) might be the best quarterback that ever played here and not one person has ever said that but me.”
Chapman’s statistics aren’t mesmerizing. In an era of air assault football with stellar passing performances, the senior has never passed for more than 283 yards in a single game.
Then again, playing with the likes of NCAA all-time rushing leader Donnel Pumphrey and 2017 season rushing leader Rashaad Penny, a quarterback would be arguably reckless to unleash an elaborate passing game.
This fall, Chapman will be mixing things up with Juwan Washington, who will try to become the third-consecutive 2,000 yard running back for the Aztecs.
Chapman’s personality is cool and level and he avoids the limelight. He just gets the job done with skill and tact, game after game.
He just keeps winning. While the stats don’t show it, Chapman masterfully protects the football; he does not experience many tackles for loss and rarely turns the ball over.
Chapman will begin his fourth and final season under center. SDSU will be looking to reach a 9th straight bowl game, and shooting for a 4th straight season with 10 or more wins.
Greatest San Diego State quarterback ever? Maybe?
Maybe yes.
When others call San Diego State a running back school, Chapman just grins. “It doesn’t bother me at all, as long as we’re winning.”
Whatever your impression: Chapman has a gamer’s attitude backed by a strong work ethic. If you underestimate him you will regret it.
