The Boise State Broncos and BYU Cougars square off on the blue turf Friday night in what is perhaps the most high-stakes edition we’ve seen yet from this young but heated rivalry.
For starters, this is the first time that both sides enter the game ranked in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll. BYU has thrived with a high-flying offense that currently ranks fifth among FBS teams by averaging 7.55 yards per play, an effort that has been spearheaded by junior quarterback Zach Wilson. To date, he has completed 74.6% of his passes and thrown 19 touchdowns to just two interceptions while averaging 11.2 yards per attempt.
Is the Heisman buzz justified? You can make a reasonable case that Wilson has put up numbers against a relatively weak slate of defenses and that the Broncos will represent his stiffest test yet. The Boise State defense has taken care of business against Utah State and Air Force, allowing only 4.8 yards per play. Even without Demetri Washington, lost for the year with injury, the Broncos still have plenty of talent on all three levels to challenge the Cougars more than most have to this point.
