Boise State’s Path To A New Year’s Six Playoff Game

For Boise State to reach a NY6 game they need help from AAC underdogs.

The Boise State Broncos have appeared in the past two College Football Playoff rankings at 25th and 23rd, but they are still behind Memphis which is 20 and UCF at 15.
That is a problem for Boise State if they want to go to its second New Year’s Six bowl game. Before we dive into scenarios between multiple teams it must be stated that the first order of business is that a conference title is the first, and most important, requirement.
After that it gets a bit murky, but we will do our best to keep it simple.
UCF has the inside track and if they beat South Florida (Friday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) in the Battle for I-4 as the Golden Knights are ranked 15th. If they win and then beat Memphis in the American title game then they get the Group of Five spot.
Memphis gets the G5 spot if they win against East Carolina (Saturday, 12 p.m. ET, ESPNU) and then win the AAC title game.
Here are the scenarios where Boise State has a shot to get the bowl bid, and in no particular order.
Memphis loses to East Carolina but wins AAC title game, but come on this is very likely not going to happen as the Tigers are a four-touchdown home favorite.
USF beats UCF and then Memphis in the American title game. This could get tricky since the Golden Knights are not yet ranked in the playoff poll. The big question is if the playoff committee will move the Golden Knights above Boise State after beating No. 15 USF and then a Memphis team which would be at worst 20 if they beat East Carolina.
Another scenario that can help Boise State is for USF to win the American title, but have Memphis lose to East Carolina. That would not give the Golden Knights a chance for a second straight win over a ranked team.
