In a game added this week, it results in a Broncos victory!
Boise State pulled off a start to finish victory over Weber State, the Broncos never trailed in the 2nd half. Senior guard Derrick Alston Jr had his best showing off the season with a 23-point outing, while drilling five triples. Emmanuel Akot had a near triple-double posing seven points, 8 REBS, 6 AST, Akot struggled from the field shooting 3-12, but impacted the game in a lot of different ways, Mladen Armus struggled scoring-wise, with two points but hauled-in double-digit rebounds.
Boise State limited Weber State to a subpar 36.5% FG percentage, and 24% from three. The Wildcats leading scorer Isiah Brown was 4-11 from the field. The Broncos won in almost every facet of the game, rebounding, turnovers, assists, steals but they trailed the Cats in blocks.
One of the more encouraging pieces of the that the Broncos were 11-26 (42%) from long-distance, with Alston hitting 5/7, and both RayJ Dennis and Abu Kigab hit a pair. Alston took the most shots for Leon Rice’s team with 14 in the contest, something that I was looking to see from the senior as he was non-existent in the later parts of the game against BYU earlier this week.
Things to improve upon:
Alston and Kigab each turned it over four times, a little too careless with the ball and you’d like to see that number down a little because against a tougher opponent that could prove to be costly.
Mladen Armus has been scuffling mightily lately, as the ETSU transfer has combined for three points in the past two games, and now is shooting below 40% from the field. As a back to the basket big-man that needs to be better, if Armus can’t get it going, I’d expect to see a steady dose of Lukas Milner and Naje Smith at the five.
What’s next for the Broncos?
As currently scheduled, Boise State isn’t going to be playing till the opening conference tilt against New Mexico, in the previously postponed series.
