This matchup is very much a rivalry game but the result this weekend may not reflect that. Boise State is a 13-point home favorite and the BYU offense has struggled all year long and it will need to rely on its defense if this game is going to be close at all.

The big story in this game revolves around Cougars freshman quarterback Zach Wilson. Wilson was committed to play for the Broncos but he decided to stay home and play for BYU, so there is a little bit more on the line for him this weekend. What is even more important is that this is Wilson’s first road start and by far the best team he has faced. Previously he has gone against Utah State for a series, Hawaii and Northern Illinois.

Staff predictions:

Erik:

This game seemed to be a red flag 2 months ago. Boise has just lost to Oklahoma State and BYU had just upset Wisconsin. There was concern looking forward that if BYU would leave Boise with a victory. Now with some injuries and sporadic play, those concerns are lessened, but rivalry games can’t be overlooked.

BYU’s struggles work right into the hands of Boise St so I don’t think this game is that far in question. Brett Rypien and the offense will be way too much for the Cougar defense and BYU offensive struggles should help our defense get their rhythm and confidence back.

Raja:

Let me start by saying that I wish Zach Wilson, BYU starting quarterback and former longtime Boise State commit, no ill will because he made a decision that he thought was best for him. Unfortunately for the true freshman he is going to be making his first road start on the Blue Turf and the crowd will surely remind Mr. Wilson what he spurned.

Boise State’s defense and especially their vaunted defensive line has several injuries but BYU’s struggling offense won’t be able to score against the Broncos. Well, they might score, but just not as often as Brett Rypien and Boise State does.

Whatever flaws the Cougars offense has, the defense is pretty solid. Still, Boise State and Rypien have been in sync lately and the offensive line has shown improved play. I expect Boise State to win and cover the spread in this game. Bonus prediction: The legendary and iconic Boise State Turnover Throne will coronate at least 3 Broncos,
