How did the Broncos fare on early signing day?
National Signing Day feels like Christmas to many college football fans, as they finally get to discover the presents that may lead their teams to future victory or fruitcake-like defeat (let’s be honest, no one likes getting a fruitcake for a present). Recruiting today is a cut-throat industry.
There are early commits, silent commits, early enrollees, fall back plans, flips, transfers, and decommits. Some coaches recruit fairly, some do not, some have even been rumored to pull scholarship offers from verbally committed players. The process in all can be exhausting for the coaches, overwhelming for the players, and nerve-wracking for the fan bases. Throughout it all, the diehard fans follow it much more closely than they probably should, hoping that all of their team’s struggles could be cured by just getting the right class (I am guilty of this). Let’s take a look at how the Broncos did after the early National Signing Day.
Some of the needs for the 2019 class were quarterback, tight end, and running back (if Mattison leaves early). Boise State had 15 commits sign their letter of intents today and we will dive into each of them below. For the purpose of this article, I will be utilizing 247
Sports Composite Rankings. The Composite Rankings take into account 247, Rivals, and ESPN rankings to provide a more complete ranking of the recruit. 247’s Team Ranking is based upon the rating of each recruit and also the number of recruits in a specific team’s class.
The Broncos currently have the 56th ranked recruiting class overall, the best of the Group of 5 teams, and better than 9 Power 5 teams. The next best Mountain West team was Nevada at 89th. If the Team Rankings were solely based upon an average of signed recruits, Boise State would rank 39th, but they are almost being penalized for having a smaller class for 2019. The Broncos had 5 blue chip recruits (recruits ranked as a 4 or 5 star) according to mainstream services.
The only other non-Power 5 team to sign a blue chip is BYU, who signed a single four-star recruit. The only two non-Power 5 teams to sign three or more blue-chip since 2005 were BYU’s 2010 class and Houston’s 2016 class (which included five-star Ed Oliver). Boise State’s 2019 class currently has a better Composite average than both of those classes did. In addition to their blue-chip signees, every other Bronco recruit is rated as a three-star by the Composite rankings. Let’s take a look at each recruit below.
In his press conference today, Coach Harsin said the Broncos offered 61 total scholarships. With 15 offers accepted thus far, that’s nearly a 25 percent acceptance rate.
Power 5 teams offered an average 232 scholarship, with Tennessee leading the way with 440 and Stanford offering the fewest at 74. Harsin said the Broncos have three more scholarships for the 2019 class, which they plan to fill by the February 6th signing day. Stay tuned to see how the Broncos finish off this already impressive class.
