Boise State Injury Bug Leads To Blowout Loss To BYU

Broncos suffer an embarrassing loss.
Boise State entered this matchup against #9 BYU looking to capitalize on their impressive performance in Colorado Springs last week. Getting a chance to take on a top 10 team on The Blue is the opportunity the Broncos have been looking for for a long time. That team being BYU is just icing on the cake.
Unfortunately, they made this cake with salt instead of sugar and it resulted in a 51-17 loss.
This game was BYU’s 8th of the season, with most of them being blowouts. Their only game that has been close was a 27–20 victory over UTSA a month ago. They have had time to hone in on their offensive and defensive strategy in live-action, which is an undeniable advantage.
With Boise State playing their third game, their second with a transfer quarterback starting, no Hank Bachmeier, no George Holani, and no Demitri Washington on defense, the experience favored the Cougars. Making matters worse, QB Jack Sears was injured in the first quarter, turning the reins over to true freshman Cade Fennegan.
Like any true freshman with little experience with the starters, Fennegan struggled and often looked rushed when dropping back to pass. BYU capitalized on giving the Broncos 6 and 7 man fronts only to bring three on pass plays, causing many unnecessary broken plays. Fennegan eventually gave way to another freshman, and Boise native, Andy Peters who was less than effective.
The lone highlight of the evening would be Junior wide receiver Khalil Shakir with 10 catches for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns. Shakir also recovered an onside kick between his touchdown catches.
The Broncos, who are playing on a short week, have another short week ahead of them as they host Colorado State in Albertson Stadium on Thursday. Colorado State is coming off a 34-24 win over Wyoming last Thursday for the Bronze Boot. The Broncos are hopeful to have Bachmeier or Sears back under center for the game.
