12. New Mexico – Miles Kendrick or Isaiah Chavez or CJ Montes

The Lobos ran into Boise State last year while deep in the midst of their offensive woes, completing only 2-of-7 attempts for 18 yards in a lopsided loss. Will things be any better in 2022? At a minimum, it is hard to fathom how it could get much worse no matter who claims the QB1 job.

11. UT Martin – Dresser Winn or Cornelious Brown

Winn is the odds-on favorite to replace Keon Howard, having done so already in a pinch to lead the Skyhawks in a playoff victory last season, but he’ll have to hold off the challenger Brown, a transfer portal arrival from Georgia State who had an impressive 2020 season with the Panthers, accounting for 2,579 yards of total offense and 24 touchdowns.

10. Nevada – Nate Cox or Shane Illingworth

If nothing else, Broncos fans may be relieved that Carson Strong has moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles. Cox didn’t look completely overwhelmed in December’s Quick Lane Bowl in spite of a dearth of weapons around him, but Illingworth had a track record at Oklahoma State of stepping into the breach to lead the way, coming on for Spencer Sanders multiple times and winning three starts between 2020 and 2021.

9. Wyoming – Andrew Peasley

Peasley’s history against Boise State is limited to just six passes, but it’s not the greatest sign that he mustered only two completions. Without much FBS experience on the roster behind him, though, he’ll get an extended audition to put the lie to that small sample size.

8. San Diego State – Braxton Burmeister

A quarterback switch helped the Aztecs to outlast the Broncos in last season’s tilt, but they may not have that luxury this time. The hope is that Burmeister, with a track record of injuries, stays healthy and, by extension, productive. If he can improve upon a career 56% completion rate while holding onto the 7.8 yards per attempt he managed in 16 games at Virginia Tech, San Diego State could be tough to stop.

7. UTEP – Gavin Hardison

Hardison was a big reason for the Miners’ resurgence in 2021, though he may have had his worst game of the year on the blue last year: He averaged 9.3 yards per attempt against the Broncos, but he also had three interceptions. After that, though, he had just one more contest with multiple picks and would finish the year averaging nine yards per attempt, good enough to tie for tenth among all FBS quarterbacks.

If UTEP can find a way to replace top receiver Jacob Cowing, they could continue to surprise throughout 2022, as well.

6. Colorado State – Clay Millen

Expectations are high for the Rams’ redshirt freshman, but a baseline of at least achieving what Todd Centeio was able to manage against Boise State last year (23-of-36, 276 yards, one touchdown) might suffice against what should be one of the toughest defenses they’ll face all year.
