The 2021 college football watch list season began today with the reveal of athletes to follow for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which is given annually to the defensive player who best exemplifies the award’s titular acronym: integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community, and tenacity.
For the second straight year, Boise State’s Kekaula Kaniho is among the initial honorees after solidifying his status as one of the Mountain West’s best defensive backs, one of just five athletes from outside the Power 5 to make the IMPACT cut. Despite the overall strangeness of the 2020 season, the senior finished with 32 tackles, two tackles for loss and a team-high seven passes defended that landed him on the all-conference second team defense.
Kaniho continued to get things done off the field as well, however, being named the recipient of the Senior CLASS Award back in December. That honor comes as a result of accruing a 3.94 GPA, three appearances on the annual Academic All-Mountain West roll call, and a spot among the finalists for the 2020 William Campbell Trophy as a health science major at Boise State.
Last year’s Lott IMPACT Trophy winner was Northwestern’s Paddy Fisher.
