Boise State, Colorado State Splits Series

Fun battle in Fort Collins.

Boise State & Colorado State was as advertised. The higher-ups at the Mountain West also have to be pleased with the results, trying to maximize the conference’s bids in the NCAA Tournament.

Colorado State won game one handily, by a score of 78-56. The Broncos made only 5-23 from deep, Alston & Shaver were the only two in double-figures and the only two that hit triples. It wasn’t for a lack of solid looks; however, the Broncos did have some clean shots, they just missed them, and CSU made Boise fatigued in transition.

Niko Medved received tremendous showing from David Roddy, leading the team with 27 points and fifteen rebounds. Isaiah Stevens had a double-double but turned the rock over eight times, far from ideal despite the dominating victory. The Rams offense looked like a well-oiled machine the entire game; the Broncos simply had no answers for Colorado State running in transition, which changed the entire game.

With the loss for Boise, it’s a Q1 loss, their first conference loss, and their first loss in two months, so it’s not an issue whatsoever.

They needed to win at least one game this series for CSU to feel somewhat comfortable about their NCAA Tournament standing.

Heading into game two, the Broncos looked motivated. The offense was clicking on all cylinders but couldn’t get enough stops to create separation in the first half. The final first-half score was 39-38 CSU leading.

The Broncos turned the heat on in the 2nd half, starting on a 9-0 run before Colorado State finally scored on a John Tonje layup at the 16:20 mark. By the under-12 media timeout, the Broncos lead ballooned up to a fifteen point lead at 60-45. The lead climaxed at 20 points before Colorado State made a ferocious run to make it a single-digit game all the way back to a six-point deficit at the 2:09 marker of the game. Boise State tightened up on defense down-the-stretch, not allowing a point the rest of the game, and winning by a final of 85-77.

Marcus Shaver led the Broncos with 21 points, with Abu Kigab, Mladen Armus, and Devonaire Doutrive pitching in with double-digit efforts.

Adam Thistlewood led all scorers with 24 points, Isaiah Stevens had a borderline triple-double with 17-9-8 but turned it over seven times. David Roddy also added 16 points.

Biggest Takeaways:

Both teams are legit and should make the NCAA Tournament. I have no doubt this team can win a few games in the Big Dance.

What’s next?

The CSU Rams head to Laramie to play Wyoming next week for a Wednesday/Friday series.

Boise State faces a tall-task when they go to Reno to face Grant Sherfield & Nevada’s Wolf Pack.
