The Colorado State Rams will host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday as they look to avoid beginning 2018 with a three-game losing streak. The Hogs got their own season off to a fine start last Saturday with a win over Eastern Illinois, and pose a formidable threat to Mike Bobo’s reeling squad.
To learn more about the Razorbacks, we talked with Trey Biddy of 247Sports’s HawgSports.com.
Mountain West Wire: What is the plan at quarterback for this game? Arkansas played both Cole Kelley and Ty Storey in the opener against Eastern Illinois?
Trey Biddy: I expect Ty Storey to start the game but to probably see Cole Kelley during the fourth series, which is pretty much the opposite of how they did it last week when Kelley got the start. Storey hit three deep passes and really sparked them last time out. The battle during camp was close, but performance in the game easily went to Storey.
MWW: How far along is the new offense which Chad Morris has installed and who are the players to watch?
TB: The offense isn’t fully ‘in,’ but they easily have enough to make it through the whole season. They’ll keep building on it into next year. The players to watch on offense could vary drastically depending on what CSU tries to do. Most of what they do is predicated on what the defense gives them. If they try to take away the short stuff, look for Jordan Jones and La’Michael Pettway to show up. If they take away deep patterns, watch out for Jared Cornelius and De’Vion Warren. All the tight ends can be weapons, and there is a talented group of RBs, but they haven’t had much blocking.
MWW: Colorado State’s offense has shown to flashes at times this year, so how good is this Razorbacks defense?
TB: I think the defense has improved a lot, even though they’ve only played an FCS opponent. They’re going to be more of an attacking defense, which means the corners will be on an island more often. They’ve been pretty bad on defense each of the last three seasons.
MWW: How are Arkansas fans feeling about playing this game on the road in Fort Collins?
TB: I think the average Arkansas fans expects to win, but they don’t think it’ll be an easy victory. Arkansas has questions at quarterback and hasn’t had success running the ball yet. It could be a high-scoring contest.
MWW: How do you see this game playing out?
TB: I picked Arkansas to win 42-28. I think in the end Arkansas’ poor running game will fare better against CSU’s poor running defense. This could be a game where CSU just gets ‘out-athleted.’
