The best Broncos players ever, in the Mountain West.
The Mountain West is 20 years in and with that being a milestone year we decided to look back at the league and do a lot of cool stuff including creating the ultimate two-deep.
We are going alphabetically with current teams and then do **gasp** BYU, TCU, and Utah at the end. Going through and creating the list our writers could use any criteria they liked.
So, it could be All-American awards, all-conference, career stats or season-long stats especially for teams that had players who played in the WAC and then came into the Mountain West.
We also include coaches and most outstanding offensive, defensive and special teams players.
This Boise State list is compiled by Jeremy Mauss, Raja Prabhala, Collin Clovis and Erik Smiley. The Broncos all-time team consists of players from 2011 until 2018.
What makes this Broncos list difficult is because there are players on this list that are all-time Boise State greats like QB Kellen Moore but he spent three of his four years in the WAC and just the one year in the Mountain West.
There are other players like that who split time and we only used those stats so if there some with fewer stats it would be due to spending time in two different leagues.
We also will have accompanying pieces to this from other Boise State writers to discuss their picks, philosophy, and players they chose that did not make the cut.
Coach
Bryan Harsin (2014-present)
Harsin followed up Chris Petersen with similar success and he gets the nod over his predecessor due to making a Fiesta Bowl while in the Mountain West and he keeps winning with 52 wins in five years, three bowl wins including a Fiesta Bowl win and a pair of conference titles.
Most outstanding offensive player
Brett Rypien, QB (2018)
There were a few players to consider for this prestigious award. Let’s start with Moore who was the Mountain West player of the year in 2011 in his one season in the conference. Overall in Broncos history he clearly is the best overall but the one year hurts him here.
Rypien is a four-year starter, three-time first-team all-league, a second-team all-league player and was the 2018 player of the year. Basically elite from Day 1 when he got into the starting job taking over as an injury replacement.
Running back Jay Ajayi was considered as well as the best player for Boise State while in the Mountain West. It was close but the four-year awards for Rypien was the edge.
Most outstanding defensive player
Demarcus Lawrence, DE (2013)
Lawrence played just two years for Boise State but he was force in the league by being a first-team all-league selection in those two years. His two-year stint was one of a kind in the league and for Boise State. Just like on offense there were other players considered with players like Darian Thompson, Tanner Vallejo, and others.
Most outstanding assistant coach
Andy Avalos, Defensive coach (2012-present)
One would think that this would go to an offensive coach, but that is not the case since the Broncos seemingly lose an offensive coordinator once they get success. It took a few years for Boise State’s defense to get the credit it deserves since the offense always gets the praise due to the trick plays and video game numbers. Avalos came up the ranks within the Broncos program and has led some of the best defenses in the Mountain West.
