The Colorado State Rams looked to take a step forward against the Illinois State Redbirds, instead they took a step backwards. The Rams fell to the Redbirds 35-19 in a game that got away from the Rams.

The Rams offense was start-stop all day. They would put a good drive together and then the next drive they would go three-and-out. The defense also took a giant step back; after putting together a decent performance against Florida, they gave up 538 yards to Illinois State.

The receivers were good and bad for the Rams. Nikko Hall had his first career touchdown reception. And Olabisi Johnson was the dependable receiver we knew he was. Preston Williams decided to take today off. He had multiple easy catches go right through his hands that would’ve helped the offense.

The defense played aggressive and was in position for the most part, but they couldn’t make the tackle. Multiple times the Rams had the Redbirds offense stopped in the backfield, only for the running back to escape for a couple yards or a big gain.

The offensive line still isn’t clicking. The Redbirds didn’t run that many stunts, but they were successful when they did. Both K.J. Carta-Samuels and Collin Hill faced pressure all day. The running game was semi-successful but the o-line still makes Ram fans miss last season.

The Rams now have a week off, which looks to come at a good time for them, before they head to California to take on the San Jose State Spartans.
