The Broncos made a statement to the rest of the Group of 5.
Boise State wasted no time in this contest and blew away Connecticut. Brett Rypien and company repeatedly drove the Broncos down Lyle Smith Field while the Boise State defense gave back very little. Up 41-0 at halftime, most of the starters checked out of this one at half time. UConn showed some flashes of life in the second half, but it was not nearly enough to close the gap in this game. Not much deep dive analysis needed for this one, let’s jump into the game play of this big time Bronco victory.
Game Flow
First Quarter
Boise State had three touchdowns with a field goal while UConn countered with three punts and interception in the first stanza. UConn only managed one first down, and Avery Williams had an interception to earn a trip to the Turnover Throne. Rypien used a myriad of weapons to move the ball effectively through the air and Alexander Mattison moved the ball on the ground. Kicker Hadden Hoggarth connected on his field goal attempt and three extra points.
Boise State 24, UConn 0
Second Quarter
The Huskies opened up the second quarter by punting the ball off to the Broncos. The stout Boise State defense did not relax with a big lead and forced punts on the other two UConn possessions of the quarter. Brett Rypien, Alexander Mattison, and John Hightower continued their assault on UConn and put up another 17 points to end the first half.
Boise State 41, UConn 0
Third Quarter
The first play of the half was a Brett Rypien touchdown to A.J. Richardson. That would be the end of Rypien’s night. Backup quarterback Chase Cord would lead the offense of the rest of the way, which saw him joined by a pair of true freshmen, Khalil Shakur and Alexander Van Buren, who also made an impact. UConn quarterback David Pindell continued to fight and was able to get onto the scoreboard with a touchdown throw, but Van Buren would immediately counter with the first rushing touchdown of his career.
Boise State 55, UConn 7
Fourth Quarter
The Broncos’ second team did not want to let their playing time go to waste and scored on the first drive of the 4th quarter, Cord to Akilian Butler. After another UConn punt, Boise State brought in their third string led by junior college transfer quarterback Jaylon Henderson. Henderson drove down the field before kneeling the game out.
Final Score: Boise State 62, UConn 7
Key Moment: The AP Poll release. When #19 UCF (UConn’s opponent last week) was revealed to be higher ranked than #20 Boise State, it did not bode well for the Huskies. Central Florida beat UConn by 39, Boise State was ahead by 41 at half time.
Player of the Game: John Hightower, wide receiver. The junior college transfer was dynamic as both a runner and passer in this one. Hightower finished with two touchdowns on 119 receiving yards and 55 rushing yards.
Injury Update: Octavius Evans (sophomore wide receiver) and David Moa (senior defensive tackle) suited up but did not play once again. Avery Williams (sophomore cornerback), forearm injury, did play and got an interception in the first half.
Next Week: The game that has been circled on the calendar, the Oklahoma State Cowboys. OK State easily dispatched Southern Alabama 55-13 earlier in the day.
