Colorado State Starts 0-2 For First Time in Mike Bobo Era
Normally from game one to game two there is an improvement in a team. Not for the Colorado State Rams who were torched for the second week in a row. This time it was at the hands of their in-state rivals as the Colorado Buffaloes took Colorado State behind the woodshed 45-13 in the 90th Rocky Mountain Showdown Friday night in Denver.
“We got taken to the woodshed. That happens. It’s not what we want. And the first thing we gotta do is we got to fix ourselves,” Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo said after the game.
It was hard to pin down one offensive star for Colorado because two guys really had outstanding nights. First was redshirt junior quarterback Steven Montez who finished 22 of 25 for 338-yards, four touchdowns and one interception. His three incompletions, the interception and two drops by Buffs receivers. He even broke off a 38-yard rushing touchdown to open the scoring a 1:24 into the game. Montez was pulled at the end of the third quarter.
Montez was however overshadowed by the record-setting performance by sophomore wideout Laviska Shenault who had 11 catches for 211-yards and a score. His touchdown came on a third and long with Colorado backed up to their own goalline. Colorado State blitz, Shenault caught a short pass from Montez, broke a tackle and raced 89-yards for the score putting Colorado up 35-10 early in the third quarter and breaking the spirit of the Rams.

Colorado State did very little right all night. Defensively they missed tackle after tackle and rarely put pressure on Montez. Offensively they were flat out dominated at the line of scrimmage. The running game was never established (in part because Colorado scored every time they had the ball and jumped out to a 14 point lead) and K.J. Carta-Samuels was constantly under pressure with several of his passes tipped at the line of scrimmage. Head coach Mike Bobo even brought in sophomore Collin Hill in an effort to jump-start the offense.
“We’re gonna go to work. That’s what we are gonna do,” stated Bobo. “We’re going to continue to work, we’re gonna get better and it’s not gonna get any easier.”
The defense is the biggest concern for the Rams. They are being beaten at the point of attack, are constantly missing tackles, and continue to give up big plays. Four of the six Colorado touchdowns were from over 38-yards. Despite causing two first-half turnovers, the Colorado State defense never stiffened until it was too late.
Offensively, Colorado State had no answer for the Colorado defense. Carta-Samuels had a pedestrian night (176-yards and one touchdown) and as a team they were only able to muster 94-yards on the ground. The night could be summed up in one play, on a second and goal in the fourth quarter, Carta-Samuels overthrew a wide open Rams receiver on a blown coverage by the Buffaloes. Overall, Colorado outgained Colorado State 598 to 273.
The loss takes Colorado State to 0-2 and things don’t get any easier. They welcome the Arkansas Razorbacks to Fort Collins on Saturday at 5:30pm. The game can be seen on CBS Sports Network.
