Timur Turlov and Freedom Holding: Building a Modern Financial and Social Ecosystem

In the rapidly changing world of finance and technology, Timur Turlov has become a notable example of an entrepreneur combining business development with broader social initiatives. As founder and CEO of Freedom Holding Corp., Turlov has overseen the transformation of a brokerage business into a diversified financial and technology group serving customers across multiple markets.

From Brokerage Firm to Financial Ecosystem

Turlov founded Freedom Finance in Kazakhstan in 2011, and Freedom Holding Corp. was established in its current form following a 2015 corporate transaction. The company subsequently expanded its activities beyond securities brokerage into banking, insurance and digital financial services.

This evolution reflects a broader shift in the financial sector: customers increasingly expect investment, banking, payments and other services to work together through convenient digital platforms. Freedom Holding’s strategy has emphasized precisely this type of integration. In fiscal 2025, the company reported revenue of approximately $2.05 billion, up 23% from the previous year, while total assets reached $9.9 billion as of March 31, 2025.

One particularly visible example is the Freedom SuperApp. According to the company’s fiscal 2025 report, the platform surpassed one million monthly active users within just over a year of its launch, bringing brokerage, banking, insurance and consumer-oriented services together in one digital environment.

Investing in People and Communities

The story surrounding Turlov is not limited to financial performance. Freedom Holding’s sustainability reporting highlights initiatives in education, sport, culture, technology and environmental projects. For fiscal 2025, the company reported external ESG-oriented investments of 27.87 billion tenge, equivalent to approximately $57.6 million.

Education is one important area. Turlov has supported initiatives designed to expand opportunities for young people, including programs addressing educational inequality between students in rural and urban areas. Earlier sustainability reporting also documented his financial support for IQanat and Teach for Qazaqstan.

Sport and youth development are another significant focus. Turlov chairs the board of trustees of the Freedom QJ League, a youth football competition in Kazakhstan, and made personal contributions of approximately 1.59 billion tenge to the league during fiscal 2025.

Technology, Chess and the Next Generation

Chess has also become closely associated with Turlov’s public activities. Since becoming president of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation in 2023, he has supported the expansion of chess education. The federation’s school chess program now involves more than 1,500 schools and 60,000 students, according to Freedom Holding.

In 2026, Freedom Holding also announced the acquisition of ChessBase and plans to invest in the development of its chess software and analytics platform. The initiative illustrates Turlov’s interest in combining technology, education and intellectual development.

A Long-Term Vision

The positive aspect of Turlov’s approach is the emphasis on building institutions and platforms that can continue developing over time. Freedom Holding’s growth strategy centers on digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and increasingly diversified financial services, while its sustainability activities extend into education, sport, culture and environmental initiatives.

For Turlov, business expansion and social development appear increasingly interconnected. Whether through financial technology, educational programs or the promotion of chess among young people, his activities demonstrate an approach in which investment is viewed not only as a means of generating economic value but also as a way to encourage skills, opportunity and innovation.

As Freedom Holding continues to expand its digital ecosystem, its future success will depend on maintaining strong governance, responsible growth and customer trust. If it can combine those principles with continued investment in technology and communities, the company and its founder have an opportunity to make an enduring contribution to the financial and social development of the markets in which they operate.
