The Bulldogs defensive end made enough plays last season to land a spot on our preseason countdown of the Mountain West’s best.

Havoc might be his middle name.
One of the most inspiring things about college football is when a local kid makes good at his nearby university, which has been a point of emphasis for the Fresno State Bulldogs over the last few years. Perhaps no one represents that better on this year’s roster than defensive end David Perales, the fourth member of the ‘Dogs on this year’s list of the best in the Mountain West.
A native of Merced, California, roughly an hour away from the university, Perales first played college ball at FCS Sacramento State in 2018 and made an instant impact as a starter before transferring down the 99 to Fresno State, sitting out 2019 in the process. When he saw the field again in 2020, though, he set it ablaze with 28 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks, and four forced fumbles, the last of which tied for second among all FBS defenders that year.
He doubled down on that disruption in 2021, earning a second-team all-conference nod for the second straight season with 45 total tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and three more forced fumbles. Chances are he’ll receive a little more attention this fall from offensive coordinators scheming to keep him off of their quarterbacks, but don’t be shocked if Perales is in the middle of some plays that turn the tide from week to week.
