2022 Mountain West Football Top 50: #45, Boise State DB Tyreque Jones

A key cog in the Broncos secondary, Jones is the second Boise State player on our annual list of Mountain West football’s top performers.

A star in his own right.

The Boise State Broncos are likely to lean upon a deep and dangerous secondary to lead the way back to prominence, which means that an athlete like Tyreque Jones, the next player on our countdown of the Mountain West’s best, could be in line for a big star turn.

After starting a handful of games for the Broncos in 2018 and 2019, the San Bernardino native cracked the starting lineup for good during the abbreviated 2020 season and then really took off last fall. Though he was listed as a starter at safety opposite JL Skinner, Pro Football Focus noted that Jones spent a good amount of time everywhere in the defensive backfield, playing at least 200 snaps each in the box, as a slot cornerback, and as a true free safety.

That skill set paid real dividends as Jones finished the year with 52 tackles, three tackles for loss, six pass breakups, and two interceptions. Most intriguingly, he also posted the best overall PFF grade, 77.5, of any Bronco in the defensive backfield. While he didn’t generate as many headlines as some of his peers on the blue last fall, don’t be surprised if he flips that script with one more strong year.
