The Wolf Pack hopes to close non-conference play strong, looking to improve to 4-1.
Nevada came out of their ever-important first four games an impressive 3-1 and now they face a struggling New Mexico State team before the Wolf Pack head into conference play. Nevada looks to sell out Mackay stadium for the second game this season in what will be an exciting homecoming night.
The Aggies are in the middle of a two game skid losing to back to back Mountain West teams Hawaii and San Jose State. New Mexico State gets no break as they face a scorching hot Nevada team. The Wolf Pack come off a huge win, beating Boise State for the first time since November 8, 1997.
In the Aggies defense, they have kept it close with other Mountain West teams. New Mexico State only lost to inter-state foe New Mexico by nine and gave the Spartans a run for their money just last week, only losing 37-31.
Nevada is lead by Carson Strong who has thrown for 300 yards a game and eight touchdowns on the season. The Wolf Pack’s ground game has been showing improvement as well. Toa Taua and Davonte Lee combined for three touchdowns against Boise State. New Mexico State ranks 107th in run defense and is sure to struggle against the much improved Nevada offensive line.
The Aggies have been able to keep up with decent teams this season. Besides nearly beating San Jose State, they scored 25 against New Mexico and 43 against South Carolina State. New Mexico State is lead by Jonah Johnson who has thrown for over 1,000 yards and five touchdowns in four games. Johnson targets two weapons in Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda and Jared Wyatt who both have over 300 yards receiveing.
If New Mexico State wants to win this game the Aggies can’t let Strong get hot. Even though Elijah Cooks is out for the season, Strong has plenty of weapons that can pick this Aggie defense apart. New Mexico State has to limit the push of Nevada’s offensive line as well. If the Wolf Pack establish a solid running game it will be a long night.
For Nevada, the Wolf Pack have to stick to the basics. If Nevada runs the ball and sets up the long ball to Romeo Doubs, Cole Turner or Justin Lockhart, then the Wolf Pack will be able to easily win the contest.
After the contest is all said and done, Nevada have one more notch in the win colum. The Wolf Pack will also cover the spread winning 48-17.
