San Diego State played it safe through their game against Utah and looks to flex their dominance in hosting the Towson Tigers of the Colonial Athletic Association. Coming in after an emotional victory, the Aztecs go up the 5 freeway Saturday against a weary FCS opponent looking to upset another FBS program
The FCS squad flies west from their Maryland campus in their first trip to California since playing St. Mary’s on November 4, 2000. The Tigers opted out of both the 2020 season and the spring 2021 season and have started slow going 1-2 so far this season. CAA media picked Towson to finish 7th out of the 12 in the conference behind historic FCS programs like James Madison and William and Mary.
The Aztecs are looking to continue their undefeated streak into Saturday, and must not look ahead to their game against New Mexico in a couple of weeks. San Diego State has its work this week to clean up their mistakes for Saturday’s day game in Carson.

Keep the Foot On the Gas
In the fourth quarter, up 24-10 the Aztecs allowed Utah to stick around when this game could have ended before the final whistle. For San Diego State, the fourth quarter alone resulted in only had one first down, 0-for-2 on 3rd downs, and all 11 offensive plays were runs. The Aztecs have the ability to close games, but the play calls weren’t effective last week. No passes were thrown and no chains were moved. Towson comes in at the right time to tune up and clean up their play calls while they head into Mountain West play next week.
Hold the Ball
Senior running back Greg Bell had his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game with 119 yards, but his fumble might have been more memorable. The momentum shifted for the Utes and that turnover got Utah back into the game. Greg Bell had is increasing his workload, and it’s very possible backs Chance Bell, Kaegun Williams, and Jordan Byrd will see more touches against Towson. It’s going to be imperative that entire roster of running backs hold on to the ball and play mistake-free and it starts with the senior.
Segun Olubi
Olubi is a 2020 MW Scholar-Athlete and this guy makes smart moves. The super senior would have run out of eligibility but because of the COVID season, he embraced the opportunity to suit up another year in the red and black. Prior to his super senior season with SDSU, he had three separate years in the NAIA, JC, and DII. On Saturday against Utah, Olubi recorded 8 total tackles and 3 QB hurries and is directly benefitting from opponents scheming for DL Cameron Thomas and LB Caden McDonald. Olubi stepped up Saturday and made his presence known and we could be seeing another emergent performance come Saturday.
