Coach Long is using an earlier signing period to his advantage.
San Diego State head football coach Rocky Long doesn’t want any stragglers when it comes to his 2018 recruiting class.
Rather than having his commits ink their letters of intent during the standard National Signing Day on the first Wednesday of February, Long has made it clear that he wants to utilize the newly implemented December signing period to lock down his recruiting class. The veteran coach issued somewhat of an ultimatum to his pledged recruits.
“The kids that are committed to us, if they don’t sign in December, we’re dropping them, because that means they’re not sure,” said Long, per the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kirk Kenney.
The December early signing period, which was implemented earlier this year by the NCAA solely for football allows senior recruits to sign their letters of intent from December 20-22, a 72-hour period.
“I think it’s great for us because we get to find out that the kids who are committed to us, they’re really committed or they’re not really committed,” Long elaborated. “I’m sure we might lose one or two in December who say they want to think about it a little bit longer. Well, they can think about going somewhere else then.”
Long is certainly taking advantage of the December signing period, and it does make sense to encourage his commits to sign as soon as they can.
However, it isn’t fully known how this will impact the over a dozen players committed to the Aztecs 2018 class and their decisions to sign.
