Was there really a doubt?
It may not come as a huge surprise that, for as long as we’ve been doing our annual summer countdown of the Mountain West’s best football players, it has typically been dominated by the gridiron’s most high-profile positions. This year is no exception, though it marks the first time that a member of the Nevada Wolf Pack stands alone atop the list.
Carson Strong emerged as the conference’s offensive player of the year in 2020 with a strong command of the Air Raid offense, riding a strong November from the previous year to new heights. He was one of only four FBS quarterbacks to complete 70% of his passes while averaging 300 passing yards per game (Mac Jones, Zach Wilson and Matt Corral were the others), throwing for 2,858 yards and 27 touchdowns against only four interceptions en route to the most successful year of the Jay Norvell era.
Though a lot of outside prognosticators are already looking to his potential future in the NFL, the Wolf Pack have plenty of business to which they must attend in 2021 and Strong will be the focal point of Nevada’s push for their first outright conference title since 1995. With plenty of weapons at his disposal, he’ll be the closest thing to must-watch television the Mountain West can offer this fall.
