A win over Australia put Team USA just one win away from its fourth straight Olympic gold medal.
The Australians outplayed the U.S. early in the game and led by as many as 15 points. However, a strong third quarter for the Americans helped them take control of the game and eventually finish with a 97-78 result.
Kevin Durant once again led the way. He scored 23 points on 10-of-19 shooting, and nearly grabbed a double double with nine rebounds. Durant made history by being the first US men’s basketball player to pass 400 points in the Olympics.
Devin Booker was also strong offensively, as he picked up 20 points going 7-of-10 from the field.
Jrue Holiday had an all-around good stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Nevada alum JaVale McGee only played two minutes but went 2-of-2 from the field to contribute four points, as well as one rebound.
France is the last opponent standing between the U.S. and a gold medal. The French made it to the final game after defeating Slovenia 90-89, despite a triple-double from Luka Doncic.
The Americans took an 83-76 loss to France during their Olympic opener due to a strong performance by the French late in the game and some missed open shots by the Americans.
Team USA will take on France Friday, Aug. 6, at 10:30 p.m. ET.
