Back again for much different reasons.
It can be tricky for a quarterback to learn how to lead a brand-new offense, especially when the old one is something like the run-and-shoot, but the next player on our countdown of Mountain West football’s top performers handled the transition with aplomb.
In a conversation about the conference’s best quarterback, it can be easy to overlook Hawaii’s Chevan Cordeiro even though he began fortifying his already-solid case in 2020. Cordeiro completed 62.3% of his passes for 2,083 yards and 14 touchdowns with six interceptions, but he also took on a lot more with legs and, with an adjustment for sacks, averaged 5.9 yards per carry. That goes a long way toward explaining how he averaged 285.1 yards of total offense per game, the third-best average in the conference, and trailed only Nevada’s Carson Strong by total Expected Points Added.
If Hawaii is able to defy expectations again in 2021, there’s a very good chance Cordeiro’s toughness and dual-threat capabilities are one of the biggest reasons why it will happen.
