The Colorado State Rams face the Fresno State Bulldogs in the last quarterfinal matchup of the Mountain West Tournament. CSU had a bye out of the first round as the three seed, while Fresno State beat New Mexico in their first round action.

These two teams met in late December for a two-game series that the Rams swept pretty easily. The Bulldogs were coming off of a COVID pause and have gotten a lot better since then. They beat Boise State last week in a game that knocked the Broncos out of contention for an at-large spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Colorado State will be looking to get a win after blowing a double-digit lead to Nevada. The Rams forced plays too many times and didn’t play to their strengths. They need to let the game come to them. The Rams are a rhythm team and they need to relax.

David Roddy leads the way for the Rams with 16.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. Isaiah Stevens (15 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.7 assists) and Kendle Moore (10.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists) are the other Rams in double figures. Adam Thistlewood, John Tonje, and P.J. Byrd are the x-factors for the Rams.

Fresno State meanwhile will be looking to continue their momentum from the Boise State upset and the first round win over New Mexico. The Bulldogs started slow, but improved down the stretch and are looking to make some noise in the Mountain West Tournament.

Orlando Robinson is the star player for the Bulldogs, averaging 14.5 points, 9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. Deon Stroud (11.8 points and 3.7 rebounds) and Isaiah Hill (10 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists) are the other Bulldogs in double figures. Junior Ballard and Anthony Holland will also get going if the Rams let them.

This is going to be a fight. This isn’t the same team the Rams faced in December. If CSU wants a chance at the NCAA Tournament, they can’t take Fresno State lightly. Fresno State will throw everything they can at the Rams, but they don’t have the firepower to keep up with them. Rams should win a close battle and move on.

Prediction: Colorado State 76, Fresno State 71
