GAME PREVIEW

Nevada registered a 84-74 victory over New Mexico this past Saturday.  Grant Sherfield averages 17.2 points and 5.4 assists while familiar face Desmond Cambridge Jr. manages 15.4 points and 4.1 rebounds.  Sherfield has either made or assisted on 50 percent of all Nevada field goals over the last five games, and has pulled off 29 field goals and 30 assists in those games.

Yes: that guy. . . Cambridge Jr: is the 6-foot-4 redshirt junior from Nashville, Tenn., who came to Viejas in December 2018 with Brown University of the Ivy League. Cambridge scored 25 points on 7 of 11 shooting behind the 3-point arc, and the Bears left with a stunning 82-61 win— SDSU’s most devastating home loss in more than two decades.

The Wolf Pack are 8-0 when they hold opponents to a field goal percentage of 45.1 percent or worse, and 0-3 when opponents exceed that percentage, and this should help SDSU to strategize.

San Diego State’s Matt Mitchell has averaged 14.9 points and 4.3 rebounds while hot-handed Jordan Schakel has put up 14.6 points and 4.2 rebounds. In his last showing, Schakel scored 28 points and sank a near-record EIGHT three pointers.

The Aztecs have been more effective on assists with 47 on 76 field goals (61.8 percent) over its previous three matchups while Nevada has assists on 36 of 68 field goals (52.9 percent) during its past three games.

San Diego State has held opposing teams to 60.1 points per game, the lowest figure among all MWC teams. The Aztecs have the upper hand on defense, although they must be vigilant knowing Nevada has won four of the last five road games.

In this matchup, Nevada will likely find themselves outclassed by the powerful Aztecs who, despite a pair of disappointing losses, have outclassed UCLA, Arizona State and St. Mary’s already this season.

GAME PREDICTION

Aztecs 72, Wolf Pack 61
