The route was on early.
With Boise State coming into Thursday night’s game wanting to erase the memory of BYU, the Broncos focused on running their all-time record to 10-0 against Colorado State. With 14 players missing the game due to Covid-19 restrictions, Boise State used some unconventional strategy in the game. Special teams played a huge role in racking up 42 first-half points with three blocked kicks and ultimately winning 52-21.

Two punts and Avery Williams blocked both and returned for touchdowns while the third was a blocked field goal that was returned by Kekaula Kaniho. The offense moved the ball well in Hank Bachmeier’s return after missing two weeks and scored 21 points of their own. Colorado State held their own between the tackles, but Broncos used a lot of misdirection to get the ball to the outside while getting Andrew Van Buren into the endzone twice. The Bronco defense took “bend but don’t break” to the extreme in the first half as well. Colorado State only found the endzone once as they outgained the Broncos 206-170 in total yardage.
Boise State showed up a little late after half time going three and out on their first possession. Colorado State responded by bringing Todd Centeio at quarterback, who provided the versatility needed to get Colorado State moving better in the early parts of the second half. The Rams were able to score twice early with the help of an Avery Williams fumble, to cut the lead to 42-21.
With the blowout looming, there was still an opportunity for an out of the ordinary play. With the Broncos attempting to go up 52-12 on the Rams, Khalil Shakir rushed on an end-around, only to fumble near the goal line. When he fumbled, the ball shot up into the air and into the waiting arms of offensive lineman Nick Crabtree, notching the first touchdown of his career. Once the 4th quarter hit the Broncos brought in Cade Fennegan to limit Bachmeier taking hits.
This is absolutely the turn around the Broncos needed to get back on track after last week. Granted there is a big difference in opponents, but being able to come out and lay it to a conference opponent while missing 14 players has to be a confidence booster.

The player of the game has to go to Avery Williams. Even with his fumble that set up a score for the Rams, he was able to block, recover, and score on two punts is an incredible feat.
Next week the Broncos travel to Hawaii at 9:00 PM MT to attempt to extend their winning streak to 9 games against the Warriors. The nine-day break is much needed after playing 3 games over the last 13 days.
