Kevin McGiven as experience in the Mountain West

The San Jose Spartans have found its new offensive coordinator in Kevin McGiven, according to both The Athletic and Football Scoop. This ends a month-plus long process for the Spartans to find its new head coach.

Andrew Sowder was poached by Kent State prior to Christmas which reunited him with former colleagues.

San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan brings in yet another Oregon State coach to build his Spartans staff. McGiven was in Corvallis from 2015-17 where he started out as the quarterbacks coach but then was the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He was with Brennan for two of those seasons and now these are the four other former Oregon State staffers now in San Jose.

Defensive coordinator Derrick Odum, wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings, linebackers coach Bojay Filimoeatu, quarterbacks coach Ryan Gunderson and defensive line coach Joe Seumalo.

McGiven is familiar with the Mountain West as he was at Utah State in 2009 as the Aggies quarterbacks and assistant head coach and had a stint as the offensive coordinator for the 2013-14 seasons before going to the Pac-12.

While at Oregon State the offense was 12th in each of his three years in total offense, bottom third in yards per play and 10th or worse in each year in points per game.

The hire does not exactly scream high-profile but having familiar people on staff is helpful to make a cohesive unit.
