College basketball is bringing out all the stops with plans, suggestions, bubbles and all sorts of ideas to get the season going. The latest comes from the ACC which every school has agreed to have this year’s NCAA Tournament be a celebration of college basketball and have one massive March Madness tournament.

This was spearheaded by Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and also Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim. It is interesting to be in agreement with Boeheim as he usually is complaining about arguing why his 17-win team is not in the NCAA Tournament.

It should be noted that the NCAA prefers a traditional 68-team tournament. However, why not try something wild for more college basketball and also to make even more money with more games in a one-and-done scenario.

There is a concern about keeping players healthy and safe during this global pandemic.

“The safety of our players is paramount,” Louisville coach Chris Mack said in a statement backing the plan. “The ability to incentivize the regular season without mandating a select number of non-conference and conference games provides options and flexibility for all member institutions. As ACC head coaches, we strongly believe it’s in the game’s best interest to have an all-inclusive 2021 NCAA Tournament.”

This would be fun to have every eligible team participated in the tournament. It would create fan excitement with teams who have never faced each other matchup for one game.

Logistically, this would take some work to get about 350 teams in a bracket and where to play them. Seeding every team would be a challenge from the top of the ACC down to the SWAC, and would it really be No. 1 vs. 350? Or would there subset brackets with some top teams getting byes. There are a lot of questions to be answered but it would be fun to have every team in March Madness.

As I have said many times in this space, it is time to get weird and try new things. Some will stick and some definitely will not, but the ones that do could really change the sport.
