San Jose State Possible Lineup And Rotation For 2018

This is going to be tough. Why? Because, as of 1/10 the complete roster has not been posted. The coach is under fire for some reason unknown and the pitching coach position is now open. Yeesh! The only players I see are the ones that are returning from last year. So, I work with what I have. I didn’t contact coach as I feel he has other things on his mind.

Bozar’s Beliefs:

C – Johnny Mendoza (SO) – .277 and 0 in only 47 AB’s

1B – Shane Timmons (SR) – .304 and 10. Second Team All-MWC.

2B – Kyle Morrison (SR) – .241 and can play other INF positions

SS – Aaron Pleschner (JR) – .279 and 0 in full time duty.

3B – David Campbell (SR) – .282 and 0 and played hurt

OF – Brett Bautista (SR) – Did not play in 2016.

OF – Kellen Strahm (SO) – .276 and made my freshman team

OF – Chris Williams (SR) – .298 and 4 and seems comfortable in right field

DH – Ruben Ibarra (FR) – Loads of power

SP – Jake Swiech (SR) – 1-5 and 5.95 in 11 starts.

SP – Tevin Cadola (SR) – JUCO transfer that redshirted in 2017

SP – Clayton Westrope (FR) – A lefty that received a lot of ink before his senior year

RP – Josh Goldberg (SR) – 2-5 and 4.91 with 6 saves in 2017

The Spartans might actually be an offensive power to be reckoned with this season. Timmons certainly has pop. Brett Bautista hasn’t played since 2016 and then only had 40 AB’s but is a proven .300 hitter. Chris Williams could have a break out season as a senior after a good 2017. Maybe. David Campbell, if healthy for once, also adds power. The rest of the lineup is questionable. Pitching is the real question. Coach has brought in many new pitchers that are not even listed on the incomplete roster (as of 12/19). The rotation could be 100% new. I have two starters who have not pitched an inning for the Spartans. That’s not inspiring. To make things worse, the pitching coach left to join the Dodgers in some new job at the pro level. Scoring should not be a problem but preventing the opposition from doing the same is.
